Study Notes
Human Embryonic Development
- Zygote: Single cell formed by fertilization of egg and sperm
- 2-cell stage: Zygote divides into two cells
- 4-cell stage: Two cells divide into four
- 8-16 cell stage (Morulla): Continued division, forming a solid ball of cells
- Blastocyst: Hollow ball of cells; has an inner cell mass and trophoblast layer.
- Implantation (7th day): Blastocyst embeds in the uterine wall, trophoblast and inner cell mass interact with the endometrium.
Implantation Details
- Inner cell mass: Becomes the embryo
- Trophoblast: Forms the outer layer and placenta
- Amniogenic cavity: Cavity formed around inner cell mass.
- Decidua: Part of the uterine wall where implantation occurs
- Epiblast: Forms the embryo proper
- Hypoblast: Becomes part of the yolk sac
