Digestive System
Mouth
- The teeth are arranged in 2 arches: superior and inferior
- Deciduous teeth: 20 teeth, each arch consists of 10: 4 incisors, 2 canines, and 4 molars
- Permanent teeth: 32 teeth, each arch consists of 16: 4 incisors, 2 canines, 4 premolars, and 6 molars
Salivary Glands
- 3 pairs of salivary glands: parotid, submandibular, and sublingual
- Parotid glands: located on the side of the face
- Submandibular glands: located beneath the lower jaw
- Sublingual glands: located inferior to the tongue
Pharynx
- Divided into three parts: nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx
- Nasopharynx: upper part of the pharynx
- Oropharynx: middle part of the pharynx, connects to the mouth
- Hypopharynx: lower part of the pharynx
- Epiglottis: controls the flow of air and food
Esophagus
- Muscular tube, approximately 25cm in length
- Extends from the pharynx to the stomach, passing through an opening in the diaphragm
Stomach
- J-shaped, expanded bag, located just left of the midline
- Divided into four regions: cardia, fundus, body, and pylorus
- Cardia: where the esophagus enters the stomach
- Fundus: superior, dilated portion below the left dome of the diaphragm
- Body: largest section of the stomach
- Pylorus: opens to the duodenum
- Inner surface: contracted into numerous longitudinal folds called rugae
