Functions of the Heart
The heart is responsible for pumping oxygenated blood throughout the body via the circulatory system. It has four chambers: two atria (upper chambers) and two ventricles (lower chambers). Deoxygenated blood from the body returns to the right side of the heart through the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava. Oxygen depletion occurs during cellular respiration; this signals the need for fresh oxygen, thus triggering the contraction of the ventricle muscle. When the heart contracts, it pushes blood into circulation.
In a process called diastole, the chambers fill with blood, which provides time for the next beat. This process allows the atria to receive blood while the ventricles relax, preparing for the next beat. The pacemaker cells direct each contraction by releasing electrical impulses that spread across the atrium and ventricles, causing them to contract simultaneously.
There are three main types of heart valves: tricuspid (right), mitral (left), and pulmonic and aortic (both in the left ventricle). These valves help regulate blood flow between the chambers and out to the lungs and rest of the body. After leaving the heart, the blood enters the arterial system, which distributes it to the various tissues of the body through branching tubes known as arterioles and capillaries.
