Tissues Overview
- Tissues are groups of specialized cells that work together to perform specific functions.
- There are four basic types of tissue in the human body.
Basic Tissue Types
- The four basic tissue types are:
- Epithelial tissue
- Connective tissue
- Muscle tissue
- Nervous tissue
Epithelial Tissue
- Epithelial tissue covers both internal and external surfaces and forms continuous sheets without blood vessels.
- Classification is based on shape (e.g., squamous, cuboidal, columnar) and arrangement (e.g., simple or stratified).
Connective Tissue
- Connective tissue provides structural support and connects different organs and tissues.
- It is the most abundant and widely distributed tissue type in the body.
- Components of connective tissue include:
- Adipose (fat)
- Dense fibrous tissue
- Bone
- Cartilage
- Blood
Muscle Tissue
- Muscle tissue is specialized for movement and has a higher degree of contractility compared to other tissues.
- Regeneration of muscle tissue is slow when injured.
- Types of muscle tissue include:
- Skeletal (striated and voluntary)
- Smooth (non-striated, involuntary, or visceral)
- Cardiac (striated and involuntary)
Nervous Tissue
- Nervous tissue is responsible for rapid communication between body structures and control of body functions.
- It primarily consists of nerve cells, also known as neurons.
- Neurons have two key components:
- Axons, which transmit nerve impulses away from the cell body
- Dendrites, which carry impulses toward the cell body
