Study Notes
Trapezius Muscle
- The trapezius muscle is a large, superficial muscle located in the upper back and neck region.
- It extends from the occipital bone (back of the skull) and the superior portion of the thoracic vertebrae down to the scapulae (shoulder blades).
- It is shaped like a trapezoid, hence its name.
Erector Spinae
- The erector spinae muscles are located in the back, along the vertebral column.
Diaphragm
- The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen.
Levator Scapulae
- This muscle is located in the upper back and neck area.
- It helps elevate the scapula (shoulder blade).
Sternocleidomastoid
- This muscle is located on the side of the neck, extending from the sternum (breastbone) to the mastoid process (behind the ear).
Orbicularis Oculi
- A circular muscle surrounding the eye socket.
- Responsible for closing the eyelids.
Orbicularis Oris
- A ring-like muscle surrounding the mouth.
- Responsible for closing the lips and puckering the mouth.
Depressor Labii Inferioris
- This muscle is located on the lower lip.
- Responsible for pulling the lower lip down.
Occipitalis
- Located on the back of the head.
- Responsible for pulling the scalp backward.
Frontalis
- Located on the forehead.
- Responsible for raising the eyebrows and wrinkling the forehead.
Masseter
- Located in the jaw region.
- Responsible for chewing.
Scalenes
- Located in the neck.
- Involved in breathing and neck movement.
Depressor Labii Inferioris
- Located near the bottom of the lip.
- Responsible for pulling the lower lip down.
Zygomatic Major
- Located near the cheekbone.
- Responsible for pulling the corners of the mouth upwards and outwards.
Genioglossus
- Originates on the inside of the lower jaw and extends upward and inward towards the tongue.
- Responsible for depressing the tongue.
Platysma
- A thin, sheet-like muscle located in the superficial layer of the neck.
- Responsible for pulling the corners of the mouth down.
Temporalis
- Located in the temporal region of the skull.
- Involved in chewing.
Genioglossus
- Located in the head and neck region.
- Responsible for depressing the tongue.
Buccinator
- Located in the cheek.
- Responsible for flattening the cheek and assisting in chewing.
Platysma
- Located in the neck.
- Responsible for pulling the corners of the mouth down.
Muscles of Abdominal Wall
- External abdominal oblique: Responsible for rotating and flexing the trunk.
- Internal abdominal oblique: Responsible for rotating and flexing the trunk.
- Transverse abdominis: Responsible for compressing the abdomen.
X-ray
- The X-ray highlights the location of the diaphragm in the human body.
