Attendance at Lectures
- Attendance at lectures is an integral part of the requirements of assessment for the course
- Any student absent for a cumulative total of three lecture periods before mid-semester in not eligible to write both mid-semester and end-of-semester examinations
- Students will not be eligible to write the end of semester examination if absences occur after the mid-semester examination

Introduction to Cell Biology
- The cell is the fundamental unit of life
- All cells share certain basic features but show huge diversity in both structure and function
- Every living organism is composed of one or more cells
The Cell Theory
- All organisms are made up of cells
- New cells are always produced from pre-existing cells
- The cell is the structural and functional unit of all living things
- The cell contains hereditary information which is passed on from cell to cell during cell division
- All cells are basically the same in chemical composition and metabolic activities
Types of Cells
- Cells are classified into two types depending on the presence or absence of a nucleus
- A nucleus in cellular terms is a membrane-bound structure that contains the organism's hereditary material and controls the cell's activities
- Eukaryotic cells are larger and have a nucleus bound by nuclear membranes (nuclear envelope)
- Prokaryotic cells are smaller and have no nucleus or nuclear envelope. Bacteria are prokaryotic cells
