Study Notes

  • The Driver's Guide for cars and light trucks is a resource with information relevant to all drivers.

Introduction

  • Driving involves both responsibility and risk, so it's important to develop the key skills to prepare accordingly.
  • Key skills are attitude, awareness, knowledge, and skill, which take education, training and practice.
  • Along with motor vehicle benefits, there are associated costs; collisions are preventable.
  • The Transportation and Economic Corridors recommends licensed driving school training to enhance knowledge and skill.
  • Driver education courses are available for passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles.
  • Additional information can be found at www.alberta.ca/driving-vehicles.aspx

Guides Available

  • The guides provide safe operation information for cars, light trucks, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles, along with licensing.
  • They are for all classes of driver's licenses in Alberta.
  • It is recommended to keep them in the vehicle for reference.
  • The Driver's Guide is for Cars and Light Trucks and provides information for all drivers.
  • The Commercial Driver's Guide is for Trucks, Buses, Emergency Responders, and Taxis.
  • It provides information about driving commercial vehicles and is used with the Driver's Guide.
  • Both guides should be used for the commercial knowledge test and truck operations.
  • Commercial knowledge tests are based on both guides, regardless of chapter titles.
  • The Rider's Guide is for Motorcycles, Mopeds, and Power-Assisted Bicycles, and it provides safe operation information and is used with the Driver's Guide.
  • The guides explain the best driving practices but do not cover every situation.
  • Judgement and a safety-first attitude should be used when making driving decisions.
  • The guides interpret laws governing vehicle and people movement on Alberta roadways but have no legal authority.
  • The driving laws are in the Traffic Safety Act and its regulations which are available at kings-printer.alberta.ca.

Additional Information

Graduated Driver Licensing

  • All new drivers participate in the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program regardless of age.
  • The GDL program provides support, skills, and experience to handle driving's complexity to improve road safety in a controlled environment.
  • Following the program milestones results in in one of the following driver's licences: Class 7 (Learner's Licence) or Class 5-GDL (Probationary Licence).

Stage 1: Learner (Class 7)

  • Class 7 learner's licenses mandate a minimum age of 14 years or older.
  • Requirements for Class 7: vision screening, knowledge test on the rules of the road, parental consent if under 18, and valid identification.
  • Learner's Licence Conditions: Must hold Class 7 for at least one year, be accompanied by a fully licensed driver who is 18 or older and seated next to you, may not drive from midnight to 5am, may not have more passengers than seatbelts, will be suspended at 8+ demerit points, and must have zero alcohol or drugs when driving.

Stage 2: GDL Probationary (Class 5-GDL)

  • Requirements for Class 5-GDL: hold Class 7 leaner's licence for a year (extended for suspensions), 16 years of age or older, and pass the Alberta Class 5 road test.
  • Probationary conditions: must be a probationary driver for a minimum of two years, no more passengers than seat belts, will be suspended at 8+ demerit points, zero alcohol and/or drug level when driving, cannot re-class to a commercial license (Class 1, 2, 3, or 4), and cannot serve as a supervising driver to a learner.

Stage 3: Full Class 5 (non-GDL)

  • Requirements for Full Class 5: must be 18 years of age or older, in the probationary stage for a minimum of two years, and free suspensions or traffic violations within the last 12 months of the probationary stage, including zero alcohol and/or drug level when driving.
  • Probationary stage can be reduced by up to six months with successful completion of an approved driver training course resulting in condition code (U) being added to driving record, and all other eligibility requirements are met.
  • Leaving the GDL program allows Class 5-GDL to convert to a full Class 5 license.
  • Additional benefits include the ability to re-class to Classes 1, 2, 3, or 4, earn more demerit points, remove the zero alcohol and drug tolerance condition and be an accompanying driver to a learner.

Knowledge Test

  • To obtain a learner's licence, taking a knowledge test at most Alberta registry agent offices is essential.
  • This test will contain questions about safe driving practices, driving laws, and road signs.
  • The test is a series of multiple-choice questions and you must score a certain number of correct responses to pass the test. You will do the test on a computer.
  • The Class 7 driver knowledge test is available in 25 languages including Amharic, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional), Cree, Dutch, English, Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Oromo, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
  • A fee applies to each test attempt, and only one test per day is allowed.

Vision Requirements

  • A vision assessment is required to obtain an Alberta driver's licence.
  • Those not meeting vision standards will be referred to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for a Vision Referral form.
  • Corrective glasses or contact lenses should for your vision assessment.

Class 5 Road Test

  • Class 5 is the most commonly held driver's license allowing drivers to operate cars and other light vehicles.
  • Passing the Class 5 allows moving form a Class 7 learner's license to Class 5-GDL.
  • The test determines whether a learner has developed the necessary safe driving skills.
  • Upon passing Class 5, the road test permit purchased to do the registry agent test must be taken to ensure the driver's licence is updated; the permit is not a driver's license.
  • This road test is approximately 45 minutes and includes the driver examiner's instructions before the test and a summary after.
  • The ability to operate the vehicle safely without supervision while interacting with users is demonstrated.
  • The vehicle used for this test must be in acceptable working condition and have a valid license plate & insurance, headlights/brake lights/ signal lights, a horn & speedometer, brakes and an unobstructed windshield and wipers, good condition tires, working driver and passenger doors, vehicle seats/seat belts, an exhaust system/muffler and mirrors, & enough fuel for the test.
  • Identifying & operating vehicle's controls include handling(steering, braking & speed control), selecting the proper lane for turns, observing & obeying speed zones, knowing right-of-way at intersections & when changing lanes, demonstrating skill at intersections (signed & unsigned), and interacting with other users respectfully; drivers over 65 are exempt from parallel parking requirements in this test.

Common Reasons For Failing The Road Test

  • Reasons include: exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for the conditions; failing to stop completely before proceeding through a stop sign-controlled intersection or before making a right turn on red; failing to yield right-of-way during an intersection or lane change situation, obstructing traffic by driving too slowly, climbing over a curb while parking, or being unable to legally park in 3 attempts, and failing to slow or observe adequately at uncontrolled intersections when prepared to yield to drivers on the right.
  • Updating the license after the road test requires for the a road permit to be taken to a registry agent to.
