Study Notes

  • The following is the most common way to tie shoes
  • Works for either the left or right shoe

Getting Started

  • Grab one lace in each hand, about halfway up
  • Hold the laces so they make a 'v' shape
  • Cross the laces to make an 'X'
  • One lace in front, the other behind

Making the Initial Knot

  • Take the lace that is behind
  • Pull it over the front
  • Put it through the hole formed by the 'X'
  • Take both ends and pull until the 'X' becomes a 'v' again
  • The harder you pull, the tighter your shoe gets

Forming the Loops

  • Spread the 'V' out
  • Take one lace at the halfway point
  • Let it hang on your finger
  • Pinch both sides of the lace with your other hand
  • Form a loop around your finger
  • Pull your finger out
  • Hold onto the open loop
  • Take the other lace
  • Lay it over your thumb and finger, in front of the loop
  • Both laces should now be pointing in the same direction

Creating the Final Knot

  • Use your finger to send the lace back to the other side
  • The laces Point opposite ways again
  • Create a little hole between your shoe and your thumb
  • Poke the lace through the little hole a bit
  • Make a loose Loop
  • Grab both Loops at the same time
  • Pull until the knot is tight

Tips For Improvement

  • Review those steps until you can remember how to do it
  • Practice many times
  • Eventually you’ll tie the knot without even looking
