Number of Countries
- There are 193 member states in the UN.
- There are also 2 non-member observer states: Vatican City and Palestine.
- Additionally, there are 2 non-member states: Cook Islands and Niue.
- Taiwan used to be part of the UN in favor of China.
- Western Sahara does not have its own government and is not technically counted as a country.
- Kosovo in Serbia is recognized by 102 countries.
- Somaliland in Somalia has limited recognition, only by 15 countries, but operates as a separate state.
- Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia have limited recognition and operate as separate states.
- Transnistria in Moldova is not recognized and struggles to operate on its own.
