Study Notes
Scale Maps
- A scale map is a map that contains a scale, which is a ratio of two numbers, to represent a relationship between the map and the real world.
Understanding Scale
- A scale is read as "1 to x", where 1 unit on the map represents x units in real life.
- For example, a scale of 1:18,000 means that 1 inch on the map is equal to 18,000 inches in real life.
Converting Units
- To convert units, divide the true distance in inches by 12 to get the distance in feet (since there are 12 inches in a foot).
- For example, 18,000 inches ÷ 12 = 1,500 feet.
Measuring with Anything
- On a scale map, you can use any object to measure distances on the map, and it will correspond to a certain distance in real life.
- The object used for measurement must be consistent throughout.
Creating a Scale Map
Step 1: Find a Map
- Find a map of an area you want to use.
Step 2: Find Actual and Measured Distances
- Measure the distance between two points on the map.
- Find the actual distance between the two points in real life.
Step 3: Calculate the Scale
- Divide the actual distance by the measured distance on the map to find the scale.
Step 4: Add the Scale to the Map
- Write the scale on the map in a corner, making it easily readable.
Example of Creating a Scale Map
- Measured distance on the map: 2 inches
- Actual distance: 800 feet = 9,600 inches
- Calculated scale: 9,600 inches ÷ 2 inches = 1:4,800
