Hinduism is a religion that has a polytheistic view, meaning a belief in many gods. It is the oldest organized religion that has survived, dating back to 2000 BC and is centered in India's culture and geography. There is no founder of Hinduism, no prophet, and no clear-cut beginning. The religion is a fusion of two belief systems. The Dravidian people worshipped a host of goddesses, while the Aryans worshipped male gods. The two groups mingled over time, and the beliefs of Hinduism were formed, with features of both original religions remaining.
Hinduism teaches that the material world is an illusion and that humans are in bondage to the cycle of reincarnation and to their bodies and its lusts. The goal of Hinduism is to seek escape from this bondage and to achieve union with the ultimate reality, that is, to become one with Brahman. This escape is called Moksha which means deliverance, emancipation or liberty.
Moksha is accomplished in various ways, such as through Karma-Marga (The Way of Works), Jnana-Marga (The Way of Knowledge), and Bhakti-Marga (The Way of Devotion). Worship is directly related to obtaining moksha, and several works have been developed over the centuries, including Brahmanas, Aranyakas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Laws of Manu, and Vedas.
Hinduism has a worldwide presence, with followers in the Middle East, Africa, Pakistan, and beyond. The religion has many beliefs concerning angels and demons that are quite elaborate and probably stemming from previous religious influence. In contrast to other religions, Hinduism does not rest its authority on divine revelation.
