Back Support Belts
- The purpose of the back support belts is to prevent back injuries among Department members assigned to ambulances and squads.
- All Department members assigned to ambulances and squads will be provided with a lumbar support back belt on a daily basis.
- Each ambulance and squad is equipped with three back belts of different sizes.
Procedure for Using Back Support Belts
- Crews assigned to ambulances and squads shall select a belt of the proper size and make it readily available for their use on all EMS calls.
- Back belts can be donned before leaving the station and worn loosely until they are needed.
- Personnel involved in patient care and patient removal are encouraged to wear the back belts, especially those assigned to the head and toe positions during a patient lift.
- Proper lifting techniques must be utilized at all times.
Maintenance and Inspection of Back Support Belts
- A daily check of the back belts shall be completed as part of the daily apparatus checkout.
- Belts in need of repair or replacement shall be addressed through the work order process and directed to the EMS Division.
