Physical Conditioning Program
- The purpose of the program is to promote the health and safety of Fire Department personnel, increase operational efficiency, and protect the community.
Goals
- Achieve and maintain sufficient physical conditioning to reduce the probability and severity of occupational injuries and illnesses.
- Reduce the negative effects of environmental and physiological stressors in firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical occupations.
- Achieve and maintain cardiovascular efficiency, stamina, flexibility, agility, and strength.
- Improve overall departmental fitness.
Program Components
- Annual Medical Examinations (when funded)
- On-duty conditioning
- Education
Annual Medical Examinations
- Include complete medical history and complete physical examination conducted by a licensed occupational health physician.
- Meet or exceed NFPA 1582 medical requirements for firefighters.
- Additional tests may be required for specialty team members.
- Physician retains all medical files.
- Department receives a form signed by the attending physician stating the person is capable of performing full duty and participating in the physical fitness program.
Fitness for Duty
- If a medical reason is found that prevents participation as a line firefighter, the Chief is notified and informed of the problem.
- Physician recommends a course of action, including rehabilitation, time frames, goals, and expectations, and light duty assignments.
- Firefighter may seek a second medical opinion at their own expense if they do not concur with the finding.
On-Duty Conditioning
- All on-duty personnel are expected to complete a minimum of 60 minutes of fitness training during their shift.
- Fitness training can be completed at any time during the shift, at the discretion of the Company Officer.
- Personnel are encouraged to complete physical fitness in flexibility, cardiovascular, and strength areas.
Education
- Comprehensive wellness program includes classes on nutrition, stress, substance abuse, and other topics recommended by firefighting personnel.
Off-Duty Workout
- Members can use exercise facilities off-duty with no compensation.
- Personnel must obtain permission from the officer in charge, wear approved exercise apparel, and not exceed manufacturer's recommendations on exercise equipment.
- All activities regarding the use of the exercise facility must be logged in the company daily notes.
