History of Jammu and Kashmir High Court

1889: The British Government requested Maharaja Partap Singh, the ruler of the State, to appoint a Council. The Judicial member of this Council was given authority over both civil and criminal appeals. The State, comprised of Jammu and Kashmir, had Chief Judges, but these worked under the supervision of the Law member of the Council.

Later: The council was dissolved, and a Minister designated as a Judge of the High Court was appointed by the ruler to resolve judicial cases.

1927: A new Constitution was approved by Maharaja Hari Singh. It replaced the Law Member with a Judicial Department Ministry.

1928: The High Court of Judicature was formed. The court consisted of the Chief Justice and two Judges.

March 26, 1928: Lala Kanwar Sein was appointed the first Chief Justice. Rai Bahadur Lala Bodh Raj Sawhney and Khan Sahib Aga Syed Hussain became Puisne Judges.
