History of Film

• Film is audio-visual imagery, moving pictures used to depict an idea or event.
• It is made from a thin, flexible strip of transparent material containing a series of sequential captured images.

Thomas Edison

• Thomas Edison was an American Inevntor.
• In 1890, he invented the Kinetoscope, a machine that could project moving images onto a screen.

Eadweard Muybridge

• Eadweard Muybridge is considered the Father of Motion Pictures.
• In 1872, he began experimenting with motion photography.
• He was hired by railroad magnate Leland Stanford to prove that all four legs of a horse are off the ground at the same time while trotting.
• The Horse in Motion was made in 1878.

Lumiere Brothers

• Auguste and Louis Lumiere are brothers.
• At 17, Louis invented a highly sensitive photographic plate.
• They invented a successful prototype of the Cinématographe.
• The Cinématographe was patented in France on 13 February 1895, and was a camera, printer, and projector.
• More compact than other projectors and it did not rely on electrical power.
• In Paris, on 28 December 1895, the Cinematographe was launched publicly and is considered the formal birth of cinema.
• There were twenty shows a day, each show comprised of ten films and lasted about 15 minutes.
• Show times were 10.00-01.30, with breaks at 12.00-14.00 and 19.00-20.00.
• Admission was one franc.
• There was little public interest at first, but eventually the queue extended a quarter of a mile.

History of Philippine cinema:

• The Advent of Cinema in the Philippines occured at Salon de Pertierra, Casino Espanol at Calle Perez, off the Escolta.
• On January 1, 1897, Un Homme Au Chapeau (Man with a Hat), Une scene de danse Japonaise (Scene from a Japanese Dance), Les Boxers (The Boxers) and La Place de L' Opera (The Place L' Opera) were shown.
• The Arrival of the Lumiere Cinematograph was by Antonio Ramos.
• The Lumiere Cinematograph showed at Escolta, corner San Jacinto on August 29, 1897.
• Ten different films were shown.
• Dalagang Bukid was made in 1919, by Jose Nepomuceno. "The Big 4" production companies were:

• Badlis sa Kinabuhi was made in 1969 by Leroy Salvador.

  • 2007 - present
• Era of Digital Films & Critically-Acclaimed Filipino Films came out during 2005 - present.
