    History of Delhi Sultanate

The Delhi Sultanate, also known as the Sultanate of Delhi, was a Muslim state established in northern India after the defeat of the Muhammadans by the Mongols in the battle of Karnal in 1260 AD. It ruled over much of the Indian Subcontinent from its capital, Delhi, throughout most of the medieval period until the establishment of the Mughal Empire in 1526 AD.

    Early Delhi Sultanate (1206–1398)

    Founding of Delhi Sultanate

The first ruler of the Delhi Sultanate was Qutubuddin Aibak, who began his career serving under Muhammad Ghori. He was appointed as governor of Ghazni when Muhammad died in 1206 AD. However, he achieved independence from the Ghurids after a short time and became the founder of the Delhi Sultanate.

Reigns of Sultan Iltutmish and Alauddin Khilji

Qutubuddin's successors, Iltutmish and Alauddin Khilji, were significant figures during this early period of the Delhi Sultanate. Sultan Iltutmish ruled from 1236 to 1238 and was known for his military prowess and administrative skills. His reign laid the foundations of Delhi as a major political power.

Alauddin Khilji succeeded Iltutmish in 1296 AD and reigned until his death in 1316 AD. He expanded the territory of the Delhi Sultanate by conquering areas in the Deccan and South India. His reign is remembered for the construction of numerous structures in Delhi, including the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, which used materials reclaimed from Hindu temples in Delhi.

    Late Delhi Sultanate (1398–1526)

During this later period of the Delhi Sultanate, several notable sultans came to power:

    Tughlaq Dynasty

The Tughlaqs ruled between 1320 and 1413 AD, with an interlude of rule by Firuz Shah Tughlaq from 1351 to 1388 AD. They are credited with bringing peace and prosperity to the Delhi Sultanate after a period of internal strife and external invasions.

    Lodhi Dynasty

Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, ended the Lodi dynasty's rule in 1526 AD. According to some historians, the Delhi Sultanate continued to function as a shadow government until Babur's death in 1530 AD.

    Economic Development in Delhi Sultanate

Under the Delhi Sultanate, there was considerable economic development across much of North India. This era saw the growth of the cotton textile industry and the expansion of agriculture, particularly sugarcane cultivation. Additionally, Turkish merchants trading with Central Asia and Persia played a crucial role in establishing networks that linked India with other parts of Eurasia.
