- Renee Descartes described a glass fluid-filled tube to be placed in direct contact with the cornea in 1636, but this design made blinking impossible.
- Thomas Young constructed a device in 1801, essentially a fluid-filled eyecup that fitted snugly into the orbital rim, allowing blinking to be possible.
