    Study Notes

    Konrad Zuse

    • Born in Berlin (1910-1995), a German engineer
    • Designed and built a programmable computer while working in isolation
    • Constructed a prototype machine in his parents' apartment
    • Developed the Z1 computer in 1938
    • Constructed the Z3, the world's first fully programmable working computer, in 1941
    • Developed the high-level programming language "Plankalkül"

    Alan Turing

    • After World War II, worked for the UK's National Physical Laboratory (1945)
    • Developed the Automatic Computing Engine (ACE) which could be programmed via instructions stored in an electronic memory
    • 1948 - moved to Manchester University
    • Led programming team for the Ferranti Mark 1 (the world's first commercially available digital electronic computer)
    • Developed the Turing Test to determine if a machine can exhibit intelligent behavior

    Machine Intelligence

    • Turing's work was influential in Artificial Intelligence
    • Turing also had interests in diverse fields like neurology and biology
    • Published a paper on mathematical morphogenesis in 1952
    • Convicted in 1952 for homosexual acts, which was illegal at the time
    • Committed suicide in 1954 at age 41
    • Turing was pardoned by the UK government in 2013

    Enigma Cracking

    • 2 years of World War II duration
    • Estimated to have saved over 14 million lives
