A Brief Historical Introduction

- Thomas, an apostle, traveled to India in 52 AD.
- Some believe Thomas was seeking lost Jewish diaspora members.
- Namboodiri Brahmins where attracted to the teachings.
- Families were chosen to lead the new Christian community.
- Thomas's mission continued to the east coast.
The Nazarenes
- Seven congregations founded by Thomas grew slowly.
- Neighbours called them Nazarenes.
- Little is known about the early church's history except for Eusebius' reference.
The Syrians/Persian Contact
- In 345 AD, a group of 400 families migrated from Syria to Kerala.
- They were received by the Nazarenes and intermingled with local Christians.
- There are very few resources about the next few centuries.
- Priests and prelates visited Kerala from Persia in the 6th century.

- Vasco de Gama landed in India in 1498.
