    Study Notes

    Origin of Bengal

    • Bangladesh's name originates from the word "Banga," first mentioned in Hindu scriptures between 500 BC and 500 AD.
    • Etymologically, the word Bangladesh is derived from the cognate "Banga."
    • Bangladesh is a new state in an ancient land.

    Origin of Land and Politics

    • Early Bengal politics were relatively small, transient, and characterized by a "fish-eat-fish" (matsyanyayam) dynamic.
    • Political fragmentation characterized the region; individual rulers existed within the area, rather than a unified authority. This was true until the rise of the Palas in 750-850 AD.
    • After the death of Sasanka, Bengal experienced disorder and confusion.

    Ancient Bengal Regions

    • Ancient Bengal was comprised of various Janapadas or regions including: Banga, Harikela, Pundra Vardhana, Gauda, Vangala, Chandradwipa, and Samatata.
    • Most of these Janapadas were integrated into the land of Bangladesh.
    • Gangaridai was one of the Ancient Mahajanapadas with its capital at Wari-Bateshwar (in Bangladesh).

    Medieval Bengal

    • The Islamic conquest began in 1204 with the capture of Gauda by Bakhtiar Khilji.
    • The Delhi Sultanate, after victory, maintained vigilance over Bengal.

    • Communities coalesced over centuries in the confluence of different regions.
    • The earliest known inhabitants were the Veddas.
    • The 8th century saw the arrival of Arab, Persian, and Turkish groups.
    • By the 13th century, these groups had settled into what is now Bangladesh
    • The cultures combined to form present day Bengali culture which is a blend of Dravidian, Indo-Aryan, Mughal/Mughal, Arab, Persian, Turkic, and European cultures.
    • Non-Bengali groups such as the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Mro, Khomoi, Kuki, and Mizo, are amongst the smaller ethnic groups within the region.

    Bengal in the 1905-1911 Period

    • During the 1905-1911 period, Bengal's area was 366,692 km².
