Study Notes
Whole Blood Composition
- Blood cells consist of three main components: erythrocytes (RBC), leukocytes (WBC), and thrombocytes (platelets)
Erythrocytes (RBC)
- 3.9 to 5.5 million per microliter (μL) in women
- 4.1-6.0 million/μL in men
- Average lifespan of 120 days
Leukocytes (WBC)
- Consist of two main types: granulocytes and agranulocytes
Granulocytes
- Neutrophils
- 54% to 62% of WBC
- Active phagocytes that engulf bacteria
- Half-life of 6 to 8 hours in blood, 1 to 4 days in connective tissues
- Eosinophils
- 1% of blood leukocytes
- Basophils
- Rare type of WBC
Agranulocytes
- Lymphocytes
- Important for defenses against invading microorganisms, parasites, and abnormal cells
- Lifespan varies from a few days to many years
- Monocytes
- Mature into macrophages, which are antigen-presenting cells
Thrombocytes (Platelets)
- Small, anucleate cells, 2 to 4 μm in size
- 150,000 to 400,000/μL
- Lifespan of approximately 10 days
