Study Notes
Simple Squamous Epithelium
- Structure: Single layer of flat, often hexagonal cells. Nuclei appear as bumps in cross-section.
- Function: Diffusion, filtration, some secretion, and protection against friction.
- Location: Lining of blood vessels, heart, lymphatic vessels, alveoli of lungs, portions of kidney tubules, and serous membranes.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
- Structure: Single layer of cube-shaped cells. Some have microvilli or cilia.
- Function: Secretion and absorption. Movement of particles out of cells, movement of oocytes, secretion by gland cells.
- Location: Kidney tubules, glands and ducts, choroid plexuses of the brain, lining of terminal bronchioles of lungs, and surfaces of ovaries.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
- Structure: Single layer of tall, narrow cells. Some have cilia or microvilli; goblet cells may be present.
- Function: Movement of particles, partly responsible for oocyte movement, secretion by gland cells (stomach, intestines), absorption by intestinal cells.
- Location: Glands and ducts, bronchioles of lungs, auditory tubes, uterus, uterine tubes, stomach, intestines, gallbladder, bile ducts, and ventricles of brain.
