Study Notes
Hindi is one of the major languages spoken globally, with over 500 million speakers across India and other countries like Fiji, Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Suriname, Tanzania, Uganda, PNG, Reunion Island, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyanese, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Seychelles, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe. Its rich linguistic heritage dates back several centuries, stemming from an ancient period when it was called Prakrit and evolved into Apabhramsha before developing further into Middle Indic languages such as Magadhi and Maharashtri. Today, Hindi forms a large part of modern Indian life, serving as the primary medium of communication between different ethnic groups living within its borders. It has also become a popular second-language choice among many migrants who have settled in various parts of the world, including those residing in Britain.
The term 'Hindi' can refer both to the standardized form used in writing, based on standard High Hindi, and the colloquial dialects spoken throughout North India. These dialects vary regionally in terms of vocabulary and grammar, reflecting local cultural differences. In addition to being widely understood across Northern India, Hindi is also commonly associated with Bollywood movies, which often use lyrics sung in Hindi. As a result, knowledge of Hindi is essential for understanding the most popular contemporary music genre in India.
In terms of script, Hindi primarily uses Devanagari, although alternative scripts exist; these include Gurmukhi, Nastaliq, Thaana, etc., each used predominantly by only certain regions or communities. Other important features in the evolution of Hindi included borrowings from Sanskrit, Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Portuguese, English, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Spanish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malay, Javanese, Khmer, Burmese, Tibetan, and Kannada. This extensive list highlights how Hindi has integrated elements from diverse sources during its development into what we know today as Modern Standard Hindi.
