Formation of Himachal Pradesh

  • Himachal Pradesh was formed on April 15, 1948, as a result of the merger of 30 erstwhile princely states of Punjab and Shimla hills into the Indian Union.
  • The 30 princely states included Baghat, Bhajji, Baghal, and others.

Evolution of Himachal Pradesh

  • Initially, Himachal Pradesh was a 'Chief Commissioner Province' of the Indian Union.
  • In 1951, it was made a part 'C' state.
  • On July 1, 1954, the neighboring part 'C' state of Bilaspur was integrated with Himachal Pradesh, adding one more district with an area of 1,068 square kilometers.
  • In 1956, the States Reorganization Commission recommended the merger of all part 'C' states, and Himachal Pradesh was termed a Union Territory.
  • On January 25, 1971, Himachal Pradesh was granted full-fledged statehood.

Administrative Units

  • In 1960, the border tehsil of Mahasu district (Chini tehsil) was carved out as a separate administrative unit, and district Kinnaur was formed, raising the total number of districts to six.
