- High School Fine Arts assists students in building knowledge and skills in drawing, painting, mixed media, and clay.
- The students will be introduced to the major elements and principles of design in their art assignments.
- This course will cover color theory, design, critique skills, color mixing, and different media and techniques.
- Rubrics will assist all students on the expectations of projects and criteria for developing personal vision.
- Weekly sketches are required and will be graded along with class participation and final projects.
Required Materials
- Charged iPad
- Non-mechanical pencils
- Handheld pencil sharpener
- Sketchbook (provided by school)
Grading Breakdown
- Projects: 35%
- Quizzes: 25%
- Weekly sketchbook: 20%
- Daily Work/Participation: 20%
Projects
- Students will complete 15 original pieces of artwork.
- There will also be 3 written assignments graded in the project category.
- A project rubric is attached.
Quizzes
- Students will have a minimum of 5 quizzes per semester.
- Quizzes will test student understanding of the elements of art, principles of design, and influential art styles of history.
Weekly Sketchbooks
- Sketchbooks with 2 drawings following assigned prompts are due every Friday.
- Sketchbooks are graded based on the student's ability to apply learned skills and techniques, and follow instructions.
Daily Work/Participation
- Daily grades are determined by the student's ability to follow classroom rules and procedures, work effectively, and complete daily assignments.
Late Policy
- 10 points will be deducted daily for up to 3 days.
- A zero is issued after that.
Project Due Dates
- Original art pieces have posted due dates, but points won't be subtracted for projects turned in late.
- All projects must be turned in by the end of the quarter to avoid a zero.
- After the posted due date, students must complete their project outside of class time.
Classroom Rules and Consequences
- Losing PBIS Points happen when students say a student's name once will result in losing PBIS points for the day. Grade deductions happen when students says name twice, weekly grade reduced by one point. Writeups happen when students says name three times, another grade point is deducted and a write-up will be issued.
- Further behavior corrections may result in a referral to the office and an email home to parents.
- Some behaviors lead to an immediate referral.
- Each student gets 4 PBIS points daily for participating and behaving well.
- Weekly grade for participation is 10 points (2 points a day).
- Disrespectful or disruptive behavior results in losing both points.
Silent Class Start
- Each class begins with a silent class for 10 minutes.
- Students should start their welcome assignment and/or work on current project during this time.
- Students can talk quietly once they have shown the ability to work respectfully.
Quiet Time Rules
- Students are only allowed to talk to their tablemates.
- Use kind and encouraging language.
- Volume must be non-disruptive.
- Students are expected to put care and craftsmanship into their work.
- Refrain from mentioning or talking about people who are not at your table.
- Do not talk when the teacher is talking.

- No phone use
- Do not touch other students
- Do not misuse materials
- Do not enter unless present
- Do not disrupt or be disrespectful
