      • Determines if the situation is a rescue or recovery.
      • Keeps non-essential personnel out of the hot zone and debris zone.
      • Keeps civilians out of the hot zone and debris zone.

    Command Positions and Operations

      • Incident Commander (i.e., Command)
      • Rescue Division (i.e., Rescue)
      • Safety Officer (i.e., Safety)
    • Operations should be conducted with as little risk to rescue personnel as possible, even if not always achievable.

    Extrication and Media Operations

    • Extricated victims: Shall be removed in the safest manner possible. EMS transport will be provided if necessary.
    • Media Operations:
      • Incident Commander shall designate a specific media operations area if the event is extended, considered “High Profile”, or otherwise attracts media attention.
      • Incident Commander or Public Information Officer should provide regular media updates if necessary.

    Hand Signals

    • Distress, Need Assistance: One Hand extended above head
    • Okay: One Hand on Head
    • Move left or right: Point left/right
    • Stop: Both arms crossed above head
    • Need Medical Kit and Help: Both arms crossed in front of chest

    Equipment Maintenance

    • After Incident: All equipment shall be inspected for cleaning prior to repacking or reloading. Any rope, webbing, anchor strap, or related nylon-based equipment must be inspected by a Rescue Team Member qualified to inspect rescue software.
    • Monthly Maintenance: Personnel assigned to the SFD Rescue Team will complete routine monthly maintenance for all high angle rescue software and hardware.
    • Damaged or Non-operational Equipment: SFD Logistics division shall be contacted if any equipment is damaged, lost, or otherwise non-operational.
