    Hernia

    Inguinal Hernia

    • Most common type of hernia (70% of all hernias)
    • Occurs in the groin area when a part of the intestine bulges through a weak spot in the abdominal wall
    • More common in men than women (9:1 ratio)
    • Can be direct or indirect:
      • Direct inguinal hernia: occurs through a weak spot in the abdominal wall
      • Indirect inguinal hernia: occurs through a weak spot in the inguinal canal

    Hernia Symptoms

    • Bulge or lump in the affected area (groin, abdomen, or upper thigh)
    • Discomfort or pain in the affected area, especially with coughing, straining, or lifting
    • Feeling of heaviness or pressure in the abdomen
    • Discomfort in the testicles in men
    • In some cases, no symptoms at all

    Umbilical Hernia

    • Occurs near the belly button (navel) when a weak spot in the abdominal wall allows the intestine or other tissue to bulge through
    • More common in infants and children, but can occur in adults, especially obese individuals
    • May be congenital (present at birth) or acquired (develops later in life)
    • Symptoms may include:
      • A soft, protruding lump near the belly button
      • Discomfort or pain in the abdomen
      • Vomiting or nausea (in some cases)
