- More common in men than women (9:1 ratio)
- Can be direct or indirect:
- Direct inguinal hernia: occurs through a weak spot in the abdominal wall
- Indirect inguinal hernia: occurs through a weak spot in the inguinal canal
Hernia Symptoms
- Bulge or lump in the affected area (groin, abdomen, or upper thigh)
- Discomfort or pain in the affected area, especially with coughing, straining, or lifting
- Feeling of heaviness or pressure in the abdomen
- Discomfort in the testicles in men
- In some cases, no symptoms at all
Umbilical Hernia
- Occurs near the belly button (navel) when a weak spot in the abdominal wall allows the intestine or other tissue to bulge through
- More common in infants and children, but can occur in adults, especially obese individuals
- May be congenital (present at birth) or acquired (develops later in life)
