Study Notes
Why Do We Forget?
- Forgetting is a natural process that occurs when information is unable to be retrieved from memory.
- It is the inability to retrieve information from memory.
Interference Proposal
- Forgetting happens because other information interferes with the retrieval of target information.
- Example: Learning the capital of Brazil (Brasilia) and then learning that Sao Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, making it difficult to recall the capital.
- Interference can be broken down into two types:
- Retroactive interference: New information makes it difficult to recall previous (old) information.
- Proactive interference: Old information interferes with the ability to recall new information.
Lack of Consolidation
- Another proposed cause of forgetting is the lack of consolidation.
- Consolidation refers to the idea that memories continue to strengthen after they have been formed, making them more resilient to forgetting over time.
- Initially, memory storage in LTM relies on the hippocampus, but over time, memories are stored elsewhere in the cortical areas of the brain, allowing for more permanent storage.
- Sleep is important in aiding consolidation.
Hermann Ebbinghaus
- He was a German psychologist (1850-1909) and a pioneer in memory research.
- He conducted some of the most important early experiments in memory from 1880 to 1885.
- He conducted many experiments using himself as the primary subject.
- One of his experiments aimed to know how much forgetting happens after different periods of time had elapsed since learning.
Ebbinghaus' Forgetting Curve
- He demonstrated that the inability to retrieve information, or forgetting, follows a particular pattern.
- The forgetting curve shows that a lot of information is forgotten rather quickly after study, but then the rate of loss slows as the length of time since study increases.
- Immediately after studying, about 40% is forgotten, and after 20 minutes, about 55% is forgotten.
Summary
- Research suggests that both interference and consolidation failure contribute to forgetting.
