Study Notes
Heredity refers to the passing of genetic traits from one generation to another through the process of reproduction. Variation is defined as differences among individuals within a population, due to random mutations during the replication of DNA, or changes in gene expression, or both. Together, heredity and variation are key concepts in understanding how populations evolve over time under the influence of various environmental factors such as climate, food availability, disease pressure etc., which can lead to different adaptive strategies being favored by natural selection.
Natural selection itself operates by favoring individuals with certain advantageous traits that allow them to survive better than others do in their environment. These advantageous traits may have arisen because they help individuals avoid predators more efficiently, find resources like food more easily, reproduce faster, or otherwise thrive better in their specific habitat. As these advantages translate into higher numbers of offspring, individuals carrying those beneficial genes will pass them onto their descendants, leading to an increase in frequency of that trait within the population across generations. Over many years, this process leads to evolutionary change.
For example, imagine a species of mice living near the ocean coastline where tides cause a lot of rainfall. Some individual mice would naturally develop longer legs so that water doesn't splash up onto them when it rains - thus surviving better and producing more offspring with longer leg genes inherited by future generations. Eventually, all the mice in that population could have developed very long legs compared to other populations of similar mice located further away from the sea where there was less frequent rain. This illustrates how natural selection works through the principle of heritability coupled with the variability introduced by chance mutations.
Heredity ensures continuity of characteristics between parents and offspring, while variation provides the raw materials upon which natural selection acts, allowing some species to adapt rapidly and effectively to changing environments. Understanding these processes has been crucial to advancing our knowledge of biology and ecology, shedding light on the mechanisms driving speciation and diversification of life forms.
