Heracles' Labours

  • Heracles was a super-strong demigod, born with superhuman strength, able to squish and kill snakes as a baby
  • He had to perform 12 labors to cleanse himself of a murder and appease the gods
  • Six labors took place on the Greek mainland, and six in the Mediterranean area

Greek Mainland Labours: Nemean Lion

  • The Nemean Lion's skin was indestructible, so Heracles had to wrestle it and use its claws to tear through the lion's skin
  • Heracles' use of the lion's claws to destroy its skin prevented any weapons from harming the lion

Greek Mainland Labours: The Hydra

  • The Hydra was a water monster with nine snake-like heads; when you cut off a head, another one would grow
  • Heracles' nephew helped him by burning the severed heads to prevent them growing back
  • Using a torch in the process of removing, the heads would not grow back
