Study Notes
Heracles' Labours
- Heracles was a super-strong demigod, born with superhuman strength, able to squish and kill snakes as a baby
- He had to perform 12 labors to cleanse himself of a murder and appease the gods
- Six labors took place on the Greek mainland, and six in the Mediterranean area
Greek Mainland Labours: Nemean Lion
- The Nemean Lion's skin was indestructible, so Heracles had to wrestle it and use its claws to tear through the lion's skin
- Heracles' use of the lion's claws to destroy its skin prevented any weapons from harming the lion
Greek Mainland Labours: The Hydra
- The Hydra was a water monster with nine snake-like heads; when you cut off a head, another one would grow
- Heracles' nephew helped him by burning the severed heads to prevent them growing back
- Using a torch in the process of removing, the heads would not grow back
Greek Mainland Labours: Ceryneian Deer
- Heracles had to capture the golden deer that had magical speed
- He was allowed to ask Artemis for help, catch the animal when it was sleeping, and then return it.
Greek Mainland Labours: Erymanthian Boar
- The Erymanthian boar was a very powerful boar, and Heracles had to hunt and trap it, using a mountain of snow and his club
- This task was extremely difficult, and was so frightening to Eurystheus (Heracles' cousin) that he hid in a large barrel
Greek Mainland Labours: Augeas's Stables
- Augeas had a large herd of sacred cows whose stables had not been cleaned for many years, so Heracles had to clean them
- Heracles used the rivers Alpheios and Peneios to flush the stables to successfully complete the task.
Other Labours (Mediterranean Area):
- Cretan Bull: Capture and wrestle a superhuman bull brought from Crete back to his cousin.
- Horses of Diomedes: The horses were cannibals; Heracles killed Diomedes and fed his flesh to the horses, to tame them
