Hemostasis Process
- Hemostasis involves three main processes: blood coagulation, platelet plug formation, and vasoconstriction
Role of Intact Blood Vessels
- Intact blood vessels prevent blood clotting by producing molecules that inhibit clotting
- These molecules include thrombomodulin, heparan sulfate, and nitric oxide
Inhibition of Blood Clotting
- Thrombomodulin binds to thrombin, preventing it from clotting blood
- Heparan sulfate inhibits thrombin and clotting factor IXa
- Nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels and reduces platelet aggregation
Damage to Endothelium
- When the endothelium is damaged, collagen and tissue factor are exposed
- Platelets adhere to the exposed collagen, leading to platelet activation and aggregation
