    Study Notes

    Emergency Equipment

    • The helicopter has two first aid kits
    • Emergency equipment includes: Canopy Jettison System, Stores Jettison System, Portable fire extinguisher, Engine and Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) Fire Detection/Extinguishing System, and Underwater Acoustic Beacon
    • Aircraft emergency equipment is discussed further in Chapter 9

    Engines Introduction

    • The T700 GE 701D EDECU engines are front drive turboshaft engines of modular construction
    • Each engine is divided into four modules: cold section, hot section, power turbine section, and accessory section

    Cold Section

    • Includes the main frame, diffuser and mid frame assembly, inlet particle separator, compressor, output shaft assembly, and associated components
    • The compressor has five axial stages and one centrifugal stage
    • Variable inlet guide vanes and variable stage 1 and 2 stator vanes are present

    Hot Section

    • Consists of three subassemblies: the gas generator turbine (NG), stage 1 nozzle assembly, and annular combustion liner

    Power Turbine Section

    • Includes a two-stage power turbine (NP) and exhaust frame
    • Mounted on the power turbine module are the thermocouple harness, torque and overspeed sensor, and NP sensor

    Accessory Section

    • Includes the top-mounted accessory gearbox and Engine fifth stage bleed air used to heat the swirl vanes, nose splitter, and engine components

    Aircraft Description and Operation

    Aircraft General

    • The AH-64E Apache helicopter is a twin engine, tandem seat, aerial weapons platform

    Engines

    • The helicopter is powered by two turboshaft engines
    • Power is supplied to the main transmission through engine-mounted nose gearboxes, shafts, and over-running clutches

    Wings

    • Left and right wings are attached to the center fuselage
    • Each wing provides two hard points for external stores pylons with hydraulic and electrical quick-disconnects
    • Wing tip pylons are installed on the outboard portion of each wing for mounting the ATA launchers

    Multipurpose Display (MPD)

    • MPD enters screen save mode if no button presses are received within 5 minutes
    • MPD can be brought out of screen save mode by selecting any button on either MPD in the crew station
