Study Notes
AED and CPR Procedures
- An AED is essential for analyzing heart rhythms and delivering shocks when needed.
- For children, chest compressions should be performed at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
- The appropriate depth for chest compressions in children is approximately 2 inches, while for infants it is about 1.5 inches.
- Rescuers must clear the victim during AED rhythm analysis and before delivering a shock.
Emergency Response Steps
- Verify the scene for safety; look for abnormal breathing, check pulse, activate emergency response, and fetch an AED.
- If a victim is unresponsive after calling for help, the next action is to check for breathing and a pulse.
- If a patient is not breathing normally but has a pulse, deliver rescue breaths at a rate of 1 breath every 6 seconds (10 breaths per minute).
CPR Techniques
- If pulselessness occurs after rescue breaths, initiate CPR immediately and power on the AED.
- During CPR, if the AED advises no shock, continue compressions until instructed otherwise or when ALS arrives.
- In the case of an adult victim unresponsive and without pulse, instruct a colleague to call for help and get the AED.
Airway Management
- Use the head tilt-chin lift method to open the airway for breaths if alone.
- For unresponsive children, assess breathing and pulse for 5-10 seconds while looking for signs of life.
Special Considerations for Children and Infants
- For children needing rescue breaths and having a pulse, ventilate at a rate of 1 breath every 2-3 seconds (20-30 breaths per minute).
- After performing CPR without a pulse for 2 minutes in a child, retrieve and use an AED.
- If pediatric pads are unavailable for children or infants, adult pads should be used.
CPR Compression Ratios
- Perform CPR in a cycle of 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths after any shock is delivered by the AED.
- In a two-rescuer situation for infants, use both thumbs placed in the center of the chest for compressions.
Common Life-Threatening Arrhythmias
- Two critical arrhythmias that can lead to cardiac arrest are pulseless ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation.
