Heart Function
- The heart is divided into two sides, right and left, with no connection between them
- Blood flow is kept separate on each side of the heart
- Deoxygenated blood enters the heart through the superior and inferior vena cavae
- The blood passes through the right atrium and into the right ventricle
- The right ventricle pumps the blood through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary arteries
- The pulmonary arteries carry the blood to the lungs where it becomes oxygenated
- Oxygenated blood then travels through the pulmonary veins into the left atrium
- The left atrium pumps the blood through the bicuspid valve into the left ventricle
- The left ventricle pumps blood through the aortic valve into the aorta which distributes the blood throughout the body
- The left ventricle has the thickest myocardium because it is stronger than the right ventricle. This is because the left ventricle is responsible for pumping blood throughout the entire body while the right ventricle only pumps to the lungs
- Coronary circulation is the process of delivering oxygenated blood to the myocardium
- Coronary arteries deliver oxygenated blood to the myocardium
- Pulmonary circulation occurs on the right side of the heart and sends unoxygenated blood to the lungs to become oxygenated
- Systemic circulation occurs on the left side of the heart and pumps oxygenated blood throughout the body
- Angina and Myocardial Infarction (heart attack) are conditions that affect the heart’s blood supply
