Flashcards
High blood pressure and heart attacks
High blood pressure and heart attacks
High blood pressure puts extra strain on your heart, weakening blood vessel walls and increasing the risk of a heart attack.
Cholesterol and heart attacks
Cholesterol and heart attacks
Elevated cholesterol levels lead to buildup in arteries, narrowing them and hindering blood flow to the heart, increasing the risk of a heart attack.
Obesity and heart attacks
Obesity and heart attacks
Obesity contributes to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, all factors that increase the risk of a heart attack.

Study Notes
Heart Attack - Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment
- Risk Factors: Age (men 45+, women 55+), high blood pressure, high cholesterol (LDL), high triglycerides, obesity, diabetes, lack of exercise, drug use (cocaine, amphetamines).
- Causes: Atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries) is a major cause. Plaque rupture can lead to blood clots obstructing blood flow, causing a heart attack.
- Types of Heart Attacks: Myocardial Infarction Type 1 (plaque rupture/erosion with occlusive thrombus), Myocardial Infarction Type 2 (atherosclerosis and oxygen imbalance).
- Symptoms: Chest pain or discomfort (lasting more than a few minutes, potentially spreading to arms, neck, jaw, shoulders), shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, lightheadedness or fainting
- Complications: Arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms), heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest.
- Diagnosis: ECG (electrocardiogram), cardiac enzyme tests (blood tests to measure enzyme levels) angiography, stress test.
- Prevention: Maintain healthy lifestyle, manage risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol, and follow medical advice if needed.
- Treatment: Medications (aspirin, blood thinners, beta-blockers), angioplasty (balloon catheter to open blocked arteries), stents (small mesh tubes to keep arteries open). Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).
- Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG): A surgery to reroute blood flow around blocked coronary arteries.
- Causes of Heart Attacks-Preventable: Diabetes, Obesity, High cholesterol, High blood pressure, Smoking, Excessive stress.
- Causes of Heart Attacks-Unpreventable: Heredity, Menopause in women, Ethnicity, Age, Gender.
- Diagnosis Methods (Images): Angiograms, ECG
- Treatment Options (Images): Stents widening a narrowed artery, inserting a stent into a blocked artery.
Coronary Artery Anatomy
- Coronary anatomy: The diagram shows the coronary arteries branching off the aorta, providing blood to the heart muscle. Key coronary arteries illustrated are: RCA, LMCA, LAD, and LCx, along with associated branches to different heart sections.
- ECG lead relationships: The diagram shows the relationship of major coronary arteries with the standard ECG leads, demonstrating how ECG leads provide electrical signals from different parts of the heart.
