Heart Valves
- Heart valves allow blood to flow in one direction only
- The sound of a beating heart comes from the closing of valves
- Lub-dup, a sound commonly associated with the heartbeat, comes from the closing of the valves
- "Lub" - Atrioventricular valves (AV valves)
- "Dup" - Pulmonary and aortic valves (semilunar valves)
Heart Contractions
- Systole is the contraction of the heart muscle
- Diastole is the relaxation of the heart muscle
- Atrial systole is the contraction of the atria and pushes blood into the ventricles
- Ventricular systole is the contraction of the ventricles and pushes blood to the lungs or the body
- Contractions are carried out by the myocardium, the middle layer of the heart
Heart Function and Blood Circulation
- The left and right sides of the heart function as separate pumps
- Cardiac output is the amount of blood pumped by the heart each minute (resting adult = 5 L/min)
Anatomy of the Heart
- Located within the thoracic cavity between the sternum and thoracic vertebrae
- Consists of 4 chambers
- 2 atria: upper chambers, smaller, thinner walls, less muscular
- 2 ventricles: lower chambers, thicker, more muscular
- 4 valves:
- 2 Atrioventricular valves (AV)
- 2 semilunar valves (SL)
- Atria are the receiving chambers that receive blood from the veins
- Ventricles are the discharging chambers that pump blood out into the arteries
Heart Valves
- Atrioventricular valves (AV)
- Bicuspid/mitral: between left atrium and left ventricle
- Tricuspid: between right atrium and right ventricle
- Semilunar valves (SL)
- Aortic: allows blood to flow out of the left ventricle to the aorta
- Pulmonary: allows blood to flow out of the right ventricle to the lungs
Pulmonary & Systemic Circulation
- Pulmonary circulation: blood flows from the right ventricle to the lungs, picks up oxygen, then returns to the left atrium
- Systemic circulation: blood flows from the left ventricle to the body, delivers oxygen-rich blood to every cell, then returns to the right atrium
Blood Flow Through the Heart
- Blood flows through blood vessels: Veins & Arteries
- Veins carry blood toward the heart; mostly deoxygenated blood.
- Arteries carry blood away from the heart; mostly oxygenated blood.
Systemic and Pulmonary Circulation
- Blood flow in the systemic circulation: Left ventricle > Aorta > Arteries > Arterioles > Capillaries > Venules > Veins > Superior/Inferior vena cava > Right atrium
- Blood flow in the pulmonary circulation: Right ventricle > Pulmonary artery > Lungs > Pulmonary vein > Left atrium
Blood Vessels
- From the heart (LV): aorta > arteries > arterioles
- To the heart (RA) : venules < veins < vena cavas
- Capillaries: Only one cell thick, facilitating the rapid exchange of oxygen, glucose, and waste products.
Blood Vessel Structure
- Tunica intima: thin cells that line the inside of blood vessels
- Tunica media: smooth muscle layer; thicker in arterial walls to withstand higher pressure
- Tunica externa: connective tissue layer; thicker in veins due to retrograde blood flow
Capillaries
- Exchange vessels that allow nutrients and compounds to move between blood and tissues
- Arterial end has high pressure, pushing substances from blood to tissue
- Venous end has low pressure, pulling substances from tissue to blood
Coronary Blood Circulation
- Heart muscle needs oxygen and nutrients supplied by its own arteries and veins: coronary arteries and veins
- Coronary arteries branch off the aorta to deliver oxygenated blood to the heart muscle
- Coronary veins surround the heart, collect deoxygenated blood, and drain into the vena cava
- Blockage of coronary arteries results in ischemia (lack of oxygen) to the heart muscle, which can lead to a heart attack
Cells of the Heart
- Cardiac muscle cells (cardiomyocytes)
- Contractile cells: responsible for contracting to pump blood
- Conducting cells: function similar to neurons, initiate and propagate action potentials to trigger contraction
- Cardiomyocytes have gap junctions, allowing ions to travel between cells
Neural Stimulus of the Heart
- Cardiac muscle is involuntary
- Regulated by the autonomic nervous system:
- Sympathetic nerves initiate contraction (spinal cord)
- Parasympathetic nerves decrease heart rate (brain)
- Action potential begins at the sinoatrial node (SA node)
- Electrical current is passed along through specialized muscle cells:
- Atrioventricular node (AV node)
- Bundle of His
- Purkinje fibers
- Electrical current can travel from cell to cell due to intercalated discs
Neural Stimulus of the Heart
- Action potential path: SA node (pacemaker) à AV node à bundle of His à Purkinje fibers
- Result: Atria contract à ventricles contract
- Electrical current generated can be detected by an electrocardiograph, producing an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)
