- Hospitals in the Philippines classified under Administrative Order No. 2012–0012, effective July 18, 2012.
According to Ownership
- Government Hospitals: Established by law; may be under entities such as National Government, Department of Health (DOH), Local Government Units (LGUs), and Government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCC).
- Private Hospitals: Funded through donations, investments, or operations by individuals or organizations.
According to Scope of Services
- General Hospital: Provides comprehensive care for various illnesses, medical and surgical services, maternity, newborn, and child care. Equipped for clinical services like Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, and emergency and outpatient services.

Specialty Hospitals: Focus on specific diseases or patient groups, often treating specific conditions or organ-related illnesses.
- Examples include the National Orthopedic Hospital, Lung Center, and Philippine Children's Medical Center.
According to Functional Capacity
Level 1 General Hospital
- Requires a qualified staff led by a licensed physician.
- Must have a specified bed capacity complying with DOH planning guidelines.
- Equipped with an operating room, post-operative recovery room, maternity facilities, isolation wards, and a separate dental clinic.
- Needs a DOH-licensed secondary clinical laboratory, Level 1 imaging facility, and pharmacy.
Level 2 General Hospital
- Includes all Level 1 requirements plus:
- Organized staff with board-certified department heads.
- Departmentalized services supporting specialties in Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Surgery.
- General Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Neonatal ICU (NICU), and High-Risk Pregnancy Unit (HRPU).
- Respiratory Therapy Services.
- DOH-licensed tertiary clinical laboratory and Level 2 imaging facility with mobile X-ray capabilities.
