    Hindi Language

Hindi, a member of the Indo-Aryan group within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family, is the preferred official language of India. It is spoken as a first language by nearly 425 million people and as a second language by some 120 million more. The language has been influenced by Persian and Sanskrit, with its standard form based on the Khari Boli dialect, found to the north and east of Delhi.

    Variants and Regional Languages

Hindi has many regional languages that are often treated as dialects. These include Awadhi, Bagheli, Bhojpuri, Bundeli, Chhattisgarhi, Garhwali, Haryanawi, Kanauji, Kumayuni, Magahi, and Marwari. However, these so-called dialects are more accurately described as regional languages within the "Hindi zone" or "belt," which spans south through the state of Madhya Pradesh.

    Grammar

Hindi grammar has been influenced by Sanskrit and the Prakrit and Apabhramsha languages, which are the precursors of Hindi. Sanskrit and the Prakrit and Apabhramsha languages are nominally and verbally inflected, with the adjective agreeing in number and gender with the noun it qualifies. Hindi, however, has been influenced by Persian, which has a simpler system of case marking, reducing it to a direct form and an oblique form. Postpositions are used in Hindi to indicate other case relations.

Hindi has reduced the number of genders to two: masculine and feminine, while other Sanskrit-based languages like Gujarati and Marathi have retained the neuter gender as well. Persian influence has also caused the Hindi system of verbal inflection to become simpler, with only the present and future indicative forms being fully conjugated, while other tenses are indicated with the help of perfective and imperfective participles combined with auxiliary verbs.
