    Study Notes

    Hardware Devices Module 1.2

    • The module covers hardware devices, including input, output, storage, and communication devices.
    • The information processing cycle is central to the module.
    • Input devices receive data and instructions, including keyboard, mouse, touch pad, touch screen, scanner, digital camera, webcam, and microphone.
    • Output devices display processed results, such as monitor or display, printer, speakers or headphones, and LCD projector.
    • Storage devices store data permanently, including hard drive, external drive, optical media (CDs/DVDs), and SSD.
    • Communication devices allow interaction, such as 3G modem and ADSL modem/router.

    Information Processing Cycle

    • Input, processing, storage, and output form the cycle.
    • Input data is received by the computer.
    • Processing involves step-by-step solutions (algorithms).
    • Data input is processed to create output information.
    • Output is the final product of the processing cycle.
    • Input devices capture data, processing converts data to information, storage devices save information, output devices present information.

    Input Devices

    • Keyboard: Typing in text, giving commands, fastest way to enter text, easy to learn and use, takes up space, skills required.
    • Mouse: Interact with GUI, click, double-click, right-click, scrolling, drag, useful whilst pressing other keys, best for a fixed workplace.
    • Touch Screen: Replacement for mouse and keyboard, functions as both mouse and keyboard, easy to use, natural interactions, increases space and usability.
    • Touch Pad: Replaces the mouse, easy for the user, not as accurate as a mouse, difficult to use, limited size.
    • Scanner: Capture images from paper, convert documents to digital format, convert image into editable text using OCR, convert film photos, benefits the environment by reducing paper and ink usage, works best with single pages.
    • Digital Camera: Capture images and videos, easy to use, photos in digital format, not expensive, instant view, doubles as a video camera.
    • Webcam: Internet video communication, live feeds of events, remote control of security cameras, video calls.

    Output Devices

    • Monitor or Display: Interactive feedback, extra visual alerts for hearing impaired people, immediate feedback, interaction between user and computer, text can be enlarged for visually impaired, good quality display is related to the size of the monitor.
    • Printer: Laser printer is fast, high-quality text, low running costs, expensive to buy, not the best for high quality printing. Inkjet printer is cheaper but slower, best for photo printing, some toner is not absorbed. Dot-matrix printer is cheap but has poor quality.
    • Speakers or Headphones: Play sound, provide audible feedback, extra notifications, listen to voice messages or interact on Skype.
    • LCD Projector: Project a large image to a large audience, allows the display to be viewed by a large group of people, quality and clarity are not as good as monitors.

    Storage Devices

    • Hard Drive: Store data and software permanently, larger capacity than RAM, cheaper per GB, and easy to damage.
    • External Hard Drive: Store and carry media, data, and software around, store backups safely away from the computer, add extra storage to the computer.
    • Flash Drive: Portable, fast data access, inexpensive, useful for taking and distributing data and software, easily lost but useful to store files, higher per GB than hard drives.
    • Optical Media (CDs/DVDs): To distribute software and content, and for backup, inexpensive, relatively small capacity, vulnerable to damage, slow, and not as good as flash drives.

    Communication Devices

    • 3G Modem: Access the Internet wherever there is cellphone reception, easy to install and use, small, good speed.

    • ADSL Modem/Router: Digital link to the telephone company's network, includes switch functionality, has wireless connectivity, and allows for Internet connection sharing, need specialized equipment such as the telephone exchange.

    Problem Solving

    • Various troubleshooting techniques for different computer hardware are given.

    Other Information
