Study Notes
HAPP – Laboratory Overview
- Instructor: Jerra May Mercado, MD
- Activities include pre-lab discussions, material borrowing, and a submission of activity worksheets.
The Basics of HAP
- Anatomy focuses on structures, physiology on function, and pathology on diseases.
- Standard Anatomical Position: Upright body, legs together, flat feet, arms at sides, head and palms forward.
Anatomical Terms
- Direction: Anterior (Ventral), Posterior (Dorsal), Superior, Inferior, Medial, Lateral, Proximal, Distal, Superficial, Deep, Right, Left.
-
Regions:
- Axial: Abdominal, Cranial, Cervical, Thoracic, etc.
- Appendicular: Brachial, Femoral, Carpal, etc.
Anatomical Planes
- Sagittal Plane: Divides right and left.
- Transverse Plane: Divides top and bottom.
- Frontal (Coronal) Plane: Divides front and back.
Anatomical Cavities
- Dorsal Cavity: Cranial and Vertebral areas.
- Thoracic Cavity: Contains pleural, pericardial, and mediastinum.
- Abdominopelvic Cavity: Includes abdominal and pelvic regions.
Microscope Fundamentals
- Magnification: Ability to enlarge images.
- Resolution: Distinction of two clear points; clarity of fine details.
-
Components:
- Eyepiece (Ocular Lens) & Objective Lenses with varying magnifications (e.g., 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x).
- Total Magnification = Objective Magnification x Eyepiece Magnification.
Microscope Parts
- Arm: Supports the head.
- Nosepiece: Rotates to change objective lenses.
- Base: Houses illumination.
- Stage: Platform for samples.
- Iris Diaphragm: Regulates light; improves contrast.
- Coarse & Fine Adjustment Knobs: Focus adjustments; use fine knob with high power.
Microscope Care and Usage
- Carry the microscope upright, inspect it before use, and clean lenses properly.
- Always start with the scanning power (4x) and adjust iris diaphragm for clarity.
- Avoid coarse adjustment with high power to prevent damage.
Four Basic Tissue Types
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle
- Nervous
Labster Activity Overview
- Activity 1: Assemble a chimpanzee model using anatomical references; scan for internal injuries and assess the need for medical care.
- Activity 2: Collaborate with lab buddy, Myra, to monitor symptoms and injuries.

Description
This quiz covers the fundamental concepts of Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAP) as introduced in the first week of the laboratory course. Students will review topics such as the microscope, basic tissue types, and essential terms related to anatomy and physiology. Prepare to test your understanding of these foundational elements in biological sciences.
