Halal Production Requirements for Nutritional Food Supplements
- Ingredients to watch out for in nutritional food supplements:
- Flavors and colorants that may contain hidden alcohol or haram animal origin ingredients
- β-Carotene that may be formulated with gelatin
- Gelatin from animal sources (instead, use halal gelatin or cellulose or starch)
- Stearates from animal sources (instead, use stearates from plant sources)
- Tweens from animal sources (instead, use vegetable-derived tweens)
- Glycerin from animal sources (instead, use glycerin of plant origin)
Types of Nutritional Food Supplement Products
- Tablets:
- Can be coated with halal-certified gelatin or lipids of plant origin
- Sugars and plant proteins such as zein can be used as coating material
- Liquid supplements and drinks:
- May contain ethyl alcohol as a preservative or solvent (alternatives include mixtures of propylene glycol and water)
- Ethanol can be used to extract bioactive compounds, but the amount in the finished product must not exceed 0.1%
- Softgel capsules:
