- The Prophet said: "To believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in Qadar, both its good and its bad." (Narrated by Muslim)
The 4 Levels of Belief in Qadar
- Knowledge (‘Ilm): Allah knows everything before it happens.
- Writing (Kitabah): Everything is written in the Preserved Tablet. Allah wrote the destinies of all creation 50,000 years before He created the heavens and the earth.
- Will (Mashī'ah): Whatever Allah wills happens; whatever He does not will, does not happen.
- Creation (Khalq): Allah created everything, even our actions, and He judges us based on our choices.
Example: Trying Out for the Soccer Team
-
Knowledge: Allah knew from the beginning whether or not you'd make the soccer team, how well you'd perform at tryouts, and how you'd feel about it.
-
Writing: It's already written in the Preserved Tablet that you'll try out for the team on this day, and the result of your tryout.
-
Will: Allah willed for it to happen. If He didn't will it, you wouldn't even show up at tryouts, or the coach wouldn't choose you.
-
Creation: Allah created everything that led to this: your body, the field, your talent, your coach's decision.
-
Believing in Qadar doesn't mean giving up.
-
It means you try your best, then rest your heart knowing that Allah knows what's best for you, even if you don't understand it now.
-
The belief that Allah created death and life to test people on who is best indeed.
-
Allah gave us free will to make right or wrong choices to test us.
-
Allah gave you a heart, a mind, and guidance through Islam so that you can choose.
-
Allah gave free will, guidance, tools to be successful, and mercy if mistakes are made and repented.
Two types of Qadar
- Fixed Qadar (Al-Qadar Al-Mubram): Written in the Preserved Tablet, cannot change, like the date of death and parents.
- Conditional Qadar (Al-Qadar Al-Mu'allaq): Written by the angels, can change based on actions, like Duaa and charity.
What is the explanation of the hadith "Nothing repels Qadar except Duaa"?
- The hadith states that Duaa can prevent or remove certain decrees.
- Allah has already written everything in the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfouz).
- Allah knows whether a person will make Duaa, and He may allow a different outcome based on that.
- It may be written that a person will get sick, but if he makes Duaa, the illness will be removed.
- If he prays, the sickness is lifted within Allah's eternal knowledge and decree.
