Gulliver's Travels Chapter 1

Gulliver's Voyage

• Gulliver, a ship's doctor, took a job on a ship that was going on a long voyage.
• The ship was caught in a violent storm, hit a rock, and broke up completely.
• Gulliver and five other crew members escaped in a small boat, but were overturned by a big wave.
• Gulliver swam to land and found himself on a strange and lonely coast.

Meeting the Lilliputians

• Gulliver was captured by tiny humans, called Lilliputians, who were only six inches high.
• He was tied down with slender strings and pegs fixed to the ground.
• The Lilliputians built a stage to Gulliver's side, and an important person gave a ten-minute speech in an unknown language.

Gulliver in Lilliput

• Gulliver signaled for food and drink, and the Lilliputians brought baskets of meat and loaves of bread.
• He was tempted to crush the creatures, but decided to behave after promising to do so in exchange for good treatment.
• The Lilliputians transported Gulliver to the capital on a large platform with twenty-two wheels, pulled by dozens of four-and-a-half-inch horses.

Arrival in the Capital

• Gulliver was brought to the Emperor's palace and lodged in an old, disused temple.
• His leg was chained, and he could only move about a little bit.
• After a few weeks, the Lilliputians decided Gulliver meant them no harm, so they set him free to roam around Lilliput.

Gulliver's Life in Lilliput

• Gulliver agreed to help the Lilliputians in whatever way he could and stayed with them, helping them in many ways.

Udagamandalam (Ooty)

• Udagamandalam is a hill station located in the Western Ghats zone at an altitude of 2240 m.
• It is the headquarters of the Nilgiri District, where two mountain ranges meet.
• The area was inhabited by the tribals called Toda long before the British ventured into the region.
• The British developed and modernized the region, and it became the Summer Capital of the Madras Presidency during the British Rule.
