Division
Division is one of the fundamental arithmetic operations used to split up a group of items into smaller sets by distributing them equally among members. It's the inverse operation of multiplication. This means if you multiply two numbers together, divide them to get back to where you started. For example, 5 * 2 = 10
, so 10 / 2
equals 5 again.
There are several types of division:
Integer Divison
Integers can be divided with whole number quotients without any remainder. So, when dividing positive integers (like 84
) by whole numbers (like 7
), there will always be a whole number answer (in this case, 12
). However, this doesn't work with negative integers; they don't have integer divisors except plus/minus themselves.
Real Number Division
Real numbers cannot be precisely divided by real numbers other than zero using exact fractional parts alone. In such cases, we approximate fractions for rational numbers (fractions) and irrational numbers (square roots) according to their precision requirements.
Fraction Division
Fraction division is done by moving all the denominators onto like bases so that each term has its own fraction. To do this, find the greatest common factor of both numerator and denominator and move it out front. Then cancel out those factors from both sides of the equation until nothing remains but prime factors. Finally, simplify your expression by reducing the result to lowest terms.
For instance, to solve (1/2)/((3*9)+3)=((1/2)*(3*9))/(3+3)
, first reduce the expression on top by taking away sixes since 3x+3=6. Next, reduce the result to lowest terms—getting (1/6)/(3+3)
. Since dividing two numbers gives you a ratio between them, [(1/6):(3+3)]=[(1/6):6]
, which reduces to simply 1/6.
Remainder Theorem
The remaining digits left over after doing division are called remainders. If we were going to repeat our problem correctly, but leaving off just enough to make sure that everything would still fit together, what part wouldn't go? That part is called the remainder.
When you want to know how much money someone got from another person minus taxes, you could start by figuring out how many dollars they received before paying tax (their income less deductions). But instead, some people might prefer to think only about how many extra cents they ended up keeping because it sounds simpler and more tangible (which adds up to the final amount due including tax).
As you can see, division plays a crucial role in understanding different mathematical concepts, particularly in arithmetic. Whether it involves splitting groups of objects evenly or calculating specific values in various contexts, mastery of division is essential for anyone wishing to grasp basic mathematics comprehensively.
