    Study Notes

    Guardrail Systems

    • A guardrail system is a barrier that protects workers from falling off elevated work areas and objects from falling onto those below.
    • It consists of toprails, midrails, toeboards, and supporting uprights.
    • Toprails must be between 0.95 meters (38 inches) and 1.15 meters (45 inches) above the walking/working surface.
    • Midrails are installed midway between the walking/working surface and the toprail.
    • Uprights supporting guardrails must be no more than 2.7 meters (9 feet) apart.
    • Guardrail systems must withstand a force of at least 90 kilograms (200 pounds) in any downward or horizontal direction.
    • Guardrail systems must be installed before any elevated work area is used, except by scaffold craftsmen.

    Personal Fall Arrest Systems

    • A personal fall arrest system is used when a complete guardrail system cannot be implemented.
    • It includes a full body harness, lanyard, substantial anchorage(s), and possibly a lifeline.
    • Body belts or safety belts are not allowed as part of a personal fall arrest system.
    • All components of the personal fall arrest system must be inspected before each use.
    • Full body harnesses, lanyards, lifelines, and other components of personal fall arrest systems must be rated and labeled for a capacity of at least 2,260 kilograms (5,000 pounds).
    • Lanyards must be tied-off to an anchorage point or lifeline that is high enough to prevent a worker from free falling more than 6 feet (1.8 meters).
    • Lanyards must have a maximum length of 1.8 meters (6 feet).
    • Self-retracting lanyards (inertia reels) are the preferred option for connecting multiple lanyards.
    • Locking type snaphooks or carabineers with self-closing, self-locking keepers must be attached to the end of each lanyard to prevent rollout.
    • D-rings and snaphooks must be compatible to prevent rollout.
