Green Economy
- A green economy promotes development while protecting the environment.
- The term "Green Economy" was first used in a 1989 report for the UK government.
- Every economy has sectors, which are parts or functions of the economy (e.g., agriculture, automotive, construction).
- To make an economy environmentally friendly, sectors requiring major changes include agriculture, construction, transportation, and healthcare.
- The sectors of a green economy are concerned about the environment.
Ecosystem
- An ecosystem is all living organisms in a specific area and the non-living environment (like air, soil, water, sunlight) in which they interact.
Food Chain
- A food chain shows how organisms are linked to each other for food.
- Plants produce food (producers).
- Animals that eat plants are herbivores.
- Animals that eat other animals are carnivores.
- Decomposers break down dead organisms.
Sustainable Development
- Sustainable development is good for the economy and the environment's future.
- An example is natural farming without chemical fertilizers that can be harmful to the soil.
Important Sectors of a Green Economy
- Agriculture: involves growing crops for food; overusing land resources, deforestation, and harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides can harm the environment.
- Energy Resources: involves using energy for daily use; relies on sources like oil, coal, and gas, which are harmful and nonrenewable. Clean, renewable energy sources like solar and wind need to be promoted.
- Construction: involves construction and buildings (affecting global resources and climate); should use cleaner energy sources, local construction materials, and avoid excessive waste.
- Fisheries: involves overfishing, which depletes fish supplies and disturbs the ecological balance. Sustainable fishing practices are needed.
- Forestry: forests are important for rainfall, protection of land resources, and survival of many tribes. Deforestation harms the environment (climate change, soil erosion, loss of wildlife, etc). Sustainable management of forests is needed to protect them.
- Tourism: tourism benefits local economies but can also harm the environment. Sustainable tourism practices (e.g., travel in groups, conserve water and energy, avoid wastage) are needed. Ecotourism (tourism which promotes environmental protection) should be promoted.
