Questions and Answers
What are some of the substances that can be used as thickening agents in grease?
Substances that can be used as thickening agents include soaps (of lithium, sodium, calcium, or barium), carbon black, asphaltenes, siloxanes, and flouro carbons.
What are the benefits of using grease instead of liquid lubricants in mills and machinery?
Grease does not spill or splash, making it ideal for situations where compounds have to be sealed against the entry of dirt, water, etc. It is also thicker and provides stiffness to the oil, allowing it to cling to moving parts.
What happens to grease when the temperature rises?
At high temperatures, the soap dissolves in the oil, causing the interconnected forces to cease to exist and liquifying the grease.
