Graphic Design Principles
- Graphic design is the art of visual communication conveying information to an audience using typography, imagery, color, and form.
Basic Elements of Design
- Point: A single mark with a precise and limited location.
- Line: A mark between two points.
- Shape: A two-dimensional area enclosed by an outline.
- Form: The overall shape of an object.
- Texture: The visual or tactile representation of how an object appears or feels (tactile and visual).
- Color: The reflection of light on a surface, creating mood and illusion; it is also the creator of illusion and mood.
- Value: The lightness or darkness of a color, creating the illusion of mass and volume.
- Space: The area around, between, and within design elements.
Color Theory
- Analogous Colors: Adjacent colors on the color wheel.
- Complementary Colors: Opposite colors on the color wheel; this relationship produces visual tension and "shock".
- Triadic Colors: Three colors evenly spaced on the color wheel. One color dominates, the second supports, and the third accents.
- Color can convey emotions and create visual interest, affecting design. Color theory is the study of how colors make people feel and their effects on design.
Typography
- Fonts (Typefaces): Specific styles of text, for print or digital media. There are four main types.
-
Design Elements in Web and Digital Design:
- Header: Design elements repeated at the top of every page.
- Body text: The main written content of a page.
- Footer: Design elements repeated at the bottom of every page.
- Navigation bar: A set of links to pages (e.g., "about us," "contact us").
- Sidebar: A column of a page typically used for vertical navigation or advertising.
- Banner: Advertisements linking to other websites.
