Graphic Design Fundamentals
- Graphic design is a visual communication process using typography, images, colors, icons, etc.
- The term "graphic design" was coined in 1922 by William Addison Dwiggins.
Basic Elements of Graphic Design
- Lines: Used in drawings, illustrations, textures, patterns, and text composition to emphasize, divide, or guide the viewer's eye. Line attributes include weight, color, texture, and style.
- Shapes: Two-dimensional external boundaries of objects. Height and width define shapes, which form the basis of design. There are two main categories:
- Geometric: Regular, mathematical shapes.
- Organic: Freeform shapes.
- Form: Three-dimensional shapes, created by shadows, perspective, depth, and sometimes texture. It gives objects a sense of place.
- Texture: The physical quality of a surface (smooth, rough, shiny, hard, soft) in an artwork or design; can be 2D or 3D.
- Balance: The visual equilibrium achieved by relating elements like line, shape, color, space, or form. Two types:
- Symmetrical: Both sides of a piece are visually identical.
- Asymmetrical: Both sides of a piece are not identical but have similar visual weight.
Image File Types
- Various formats exist for storing images, including vector and raster formats.
- Vector formats are scalable without losing quality.
- Raster formats have fixed resolution.
Color Theory
- Color theory explains how colors interact.
- Hue: Pure color.
- Saturation: Color intensity (vibrant to desaturated).
- Value: Lightness or darkness. (light to dark)
Color Schemes
- Monochromatic: Uses variations of a single color.
- Achromatic: Uses desaturated colors (black, gray, white)
- Analogous: Uses colors adjacent to each other on a color wheel.
Image Composition
- Images, including photos, illustrations, and graphics, are essential elements of visual communication.
- Visual design uses various image file types.
