Punctuation Marks
- A colon (:) is used to introduce a list, quotation, or explanation, and is often preceded by a complete sentence.
- A semicolon (;) is used to separate two independent clauses that are closely related in meaning.
- A dash (-) is used to indicate a break in thought or to set off a parenthetical remark, and can be used in place of commas or parentheses.
Past Tenses
- The past simple tense is used to describe completed actions in the past, and is often used with a specific time or date.
- The past continuous tense is used to describe an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past, and can be used to show that one action was interrupted by another.
Cohesive Devices
- Cohesive devices are words or phrases that link ideas together in a text, and include conjunctions, transitions, and pronouns.
- Examples of cohesive devices include however, therefore, in addition, and meanwhile.
- Cohesive devices help to create a clear and logical flow of ideas in a text, and can be used to signal addition, contrast, or cause and effect.
